Acts 4:1-4, Not Giving Up (Hechos 4:1-4, No Darse Por Vencido)

Around the time that Jesus was crucified, rose from the dead, and finally rose up into Heaven, the Apostles went through so much it is amazing that some of them didn’t turn around and run. They had been traveling around listening to Jesus for three years and seeing some pretty amazing things. (Ellos han sido viajando alreadedor y escuchando a Jesus have tres años, y estaban viendo unas cosas my asombroso.) Then, their world came crashing down around them because the soldiers came and arrested Jesus, the one they had put all their hope in. At that point, Peter could easily have run because he denied Christ three times. However, when the rooster crowed, he remembered and was sorry for his inclination to separate himself from Christ. This is not all that these guys who had been following Jesus around had to endure.

The most terrible thing that happened was not when the soldiers seized Jesus, but then, they hung him on a cross and killed him. All the believers were together, and they were, no doubt, confused, terrible sad, and scared. Their world had really crashed hard! There were lots of tears! (!Hubieron muchas lagrimas!) However, they didn’t turn and run. (Sin embargo, ellos no girion y corrieron.) They stayed together. (Ellos quedaron juntos.) That was the best thing they could have done, but it would have been easy for them to begin doubting what they had been doing and run. Then, the greatest miracle that has ever happened happened! The one they had put all their hopes in rose from the grave! I bet their nerves were shot! (¡Apuesto a que sus nervios estaban disparados!) Thomas didn’t even believe what he saw with his own eyes! He had to touch the nail scars in Jesus hand to be convinced.

For a while, things calmed down. (Por un tiempo, las cosas se calmaron.) Jesus stayed with them continuing to teach them for forty days. After that, they saw something else shocking! Jesus rose up into the clouds, and there were 120 people there standing in amazement watching. Then an angel appeared to them and told them that Jesus had gone into Heaven and would come back in the same way. How many of us have seen an angel? (Cunatos entre nosostros hemos visto un angel?) How would you feel if an angel appeared and talked to you? If you were alone, you might be wondering if you had just hallucinated, but they knew they didn’t hallucinate because there were 120 people there. None of them had run. (Ninguno de ellos habian corrido.) They stayed together and went back to Jerusalem to wait for a gift Jesus had promised them.

When that gift arrived, it was another shock! There was a huge wind that blew into the room where they were, and everyone outside saw it come, so they ran up the stairs into the room to make sure these guys were okay. It would have been like a tornado concentrating on one room. The apostles were still being put through so much that surely their emotions were crazy! Not one of them gave up, but they were brave. The holy spirit entered them, and they began speaking in languages they hadn’t studied and talking about what they had witnessed.

Their bravery paid. (Su valentía pagada.) Three thousand people joined them becoming Christians that day. After that, Peter and John had helped a crippled man walk and were preaching. The soldiers then came to arrest them like they did Jesus. The crazy things just didn’t stop happening! (Las locuras simplemente no dejen de suceder.) The apostles didn’t run. (Los apostoles no corrieron.) It would have been really easy to decide this was just too much and for them to want to get out of there. However, they were brave. (Sin embargo, ellos eran valientes.) Because they were brave, two thousand more people became Christians that day (Acts 4:4).

Not one of us has had a completely uneventful life. If something really crazy hasn’t happened to you yet, just wait, it will. (Si algo realmente loco no te ha pasado todavía, espera te, va pasar.) The apostles had a foundation and that foundation helped them to stand firm and handle all this upheaval in their lives. They didn’t go crazy. (Ellos no cabiaron en locos.) They didn’t run. (Ellos no corrieron.) They were brave. (Ellos estaban valientes.) They didn’t give up. (Ellos no se dieron por vencidos.) God gives us the foundation we need to withstand the storms that come into our lives. We don’t have to do it alone. (No necestiamso hacer los solo.) They apostles stayed together, and everyone benefited because they did. Stay together. (Quedan juntos.) Don’t give up. (No te rindas.) Be brave and lean on God. (Sé valiente y apóyágase en Dios.) “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13). (Puedo hacer todas las cosas a travers de Cristo quien me da fuerte” (Filipenses 4:13).)
