Acts 2:22-39, Peter Finishes His Sermon in Triumph (Hechos 2:22-39, Pedro Termina su Sermon con Triunfante)

So far, in Peter’s sermon, he has gained everyone’s attention. He and the other apostles were speaking in languages they hadn’t studied communicating with people from all over the world through the holy spirit. Peter had told them that the time that was prophesied in the Old Testament when peace would rein between nations, everyone would be the same regardless of race, gender or age, had finally come (Joel 2:28-32, Isaiah 2:1-5, Acts 2:17-21). Now, he continues by talking to them about Jesus.

Everyone knew that Jesus had done miracles. (Todos sabian que Jesus habia hecho milagros.) They had all seen what he had done. Peter tells them that they need to pay attention to the miracles because they gave Jesus validity as being from God. He was right. (‘El tuvo razon.) After all, how many people have you met that can do miracles? Then he reminds them that they had handed Jesus over to the Romans to be killed.

He let them know that God knew it was going to happen. It was all part of the plan of God. (Todos fue parte del plan de Dios.) He says the prophets told them that they would kill the Messiah (Isaiah 53:10). Then, he tells them that Jesus has risen from the dead. He points out, too that this was part of God’s plan. He refers to what David said in Psalms 16:10 when he says that there is a holy one who will come from David who will not rot in the grave. He says in verse 28 of Acts 2 that David also said in this Psalms that God would give this holy one the knowledge of the paths of life. Peter tells them that David died and was buried, and that it was Jesus he was talking about that would not rot in the grave (Acts 2:31).

Next, Peter tells them that Jesus is victorious because of all this, that he is indeed, the Messiah. Peter then uses an image that was common in those times and says that Jesus’ enemies are his footstool (Acts 2:34, 1 Kings 4:3, Psalms 110:1, 2 Chronicles 9:18, Joshua 10:24.) The expression of the enemies being under your feet in those days meant that you were victorious. The New Testament applies this image to Christ many times (Acts 2:34&35, 1 Corinthians 15:25, Ephesians 1:22). ) There is no doubt that these people understood what Peter was talking about well. Then, Peter hits the nail on the head hard and says they can all be sure that God made Jesus Christ, who they had crucified, to be both Lord and Christ, basically, King and Messiah.

The people knew he was right, and it worried them to death!! They realized they had just killed the savior of the world!! They were truly upset to the point that their hearts were hurting. After all, how would you feel if you just realized you had killed the son of God? They probably thought they were lost for sure! (Probabil, !ellos pensaban que estaban perdidos sebguro!) They asked Peter, “What shall we do?” (Ellos pregutaron a Pedro, “?Que haremos?) Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized every one of you for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off–for all whom the Lord our God will call” (Acts 2:38-39). (Pedro respondio’. This promise wasn’t just for them, but for us too, for everyone.

What does it mean to repent and and receive forgiveness and the gift of the Holy Spirit? They had done something they knew was very bad, and each one of us, if we are honest, know that we have also done bad things. Romans 3:23 says, “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” Repentance is understanding that you have sinned, feeling bad that you have done it, and turning around and going in the opposite direction, submitting yourself to God and trying to do what he wants. If you stole, you no longer steal. (Si robabas, ya no robas.) If you lie, you no longer lie. (Si mientes, ya no mientes.) If you treat others badly, you no longer treat others badly, etc.. After you have decided to change, then you need to get rid of the sins that you already have. Baptism washes sins away (Acts 22:16). (El bautizmo lavo los pecados (Hechos 22:16). However, you can’t be baptized and not repent (1 Peter 3:21). Both in Acts 2:38 and 1 Peter 3:21, and many other places, it is clear that just one doesn’t do the job. If you were baptized, but you didn’t make the commitment to do the right thing, that baptism did you no good. If you have decided to do the right thing, you still have to be baptized. Read the story of Cornelius, a very good man who still needed baptismm, so God sent Peter to him (Acts 10).

If you are wondering what you receive if you receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, read Galatians 5: 22-23, and Paul tells us. This is a beautiful list of gifts: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.” ) What a beautiful list of gifts! (!Que lista muy bonita de regalos!)

When Peter told the people this, three thousand people were baptized. They continued meeting together everyday. (Continuaron reuniéndose todos los días.) The apostles continued teaching them. (Los apostoles contnuaron ensenadoles.) It says that they broke bread together. (Dice que ellos partieron el pan juntos.) They were enjoying eating together, enjoying one another’s company (John 13:35). The first church was formed. (Se formo’ la primera iglesa,)
