Matthew 27:1-10, He Sold His Soul for Money (Mateo 27:1-10, ‘El Vendo’ su Alma Para Dinero)

These verses are talking about Judas, but how many people do the same thing everyday and don’t realize it? ) How many people wink at what they have to do to get money? Loving God can’t be just on the surface, but it must go deep into our hearts. We can’t love God or love others just on the surface and have it mean anything. The greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, your soul, and your mind. In Mark 12: 29-31, Jesus says this when questioned about the greatest commandment:

What do we do for money? (?Que hacemos para dinero?)

“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear oh Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all of your mind and with all of your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Judas broke both of these commandments for money. Today, people do it everyday and don’t even realize what they are doing, but they all want to codemn Judas. When I was younger, I knew a preacher who wanted to go back to Korea. He had been in the military in Korea, and some boy asked him the meaning of life. The man was not a Christian yet when he was a soldier, and he said to the boy, “Put your hand down inside another man’s pocket and get it just as deep as you can.” When the man came home from Korea, he had become a Christian, and then a preacher. He remembered what he said to the boy and worried. “) He always wished he could go back and undo the damage he had done, but he couldn’t.

Some cheat on their taxes. (Algunos engañan con sus impuestos.)

Even Christians make stupid mistakes like this man made sometimes. How much do we consider the other people? (?Cuanto nosotros cosideramos a los otras personas?) Do we sell our souls for money? (?Vendemos nuestras almas por dinero?) Are we out for how much we can get from the other guy? Do we consider ourselves such a smart business man because we can talk everyone out of their money? Or, are we fair with them? (?O somos justos con ellos?) Do we take whatever handouts we can from the government just because they are free whether we need them or not? I have heard so many people say to accept government handouts because everyone is doing it, so I might as well get mine. Don’t people understand that if everyone is taking government hand outs that they could break the economy? Is there no dignity left? (?No queda dignidad?) If we can pay for ourselves, it is only right to pay for ourselves.

Judas sold him for money. I hope we don’t. (Judas lo vendo’ para dinero. Espero que no hacemos lo.)

Judas was sorry for what he had done. The whole world is really hard on Judas for selling Jesus for money, but many people do it everyday. Judas selling Jesus for money was part of God’s plan for the redemption of the world. Jesus knew he would do it, and he had to if Jesus was going to die for the sins of the world (Matthew 26:21-25).

When they didn’t accept the money, Judas threw it at them.

When Judas realized what he had done, he couldn’t handle the truth. He took the money back to the high priests and elders who had given him money to sell Jesus. He was sorry because he knew Jesus was innocent, and he could tell they were going to kill him. He knew he had been wrong. They wouldn’t accept the money. (Ellos no aceptarian el dinero.) Judas just threw the money at them and left. Judas was so beside himself that he went out and hung himself. Acts 1:18 says his body fell and all his intestines spilled out.

He hung himself. (Se ahorco’.)

He killed himself from grief over what he had done. How many of us ever feel that bad when we have done something we shouldn’t have done? When I lived in Korea, one of the presidents took a bribe, and it ate him up inside so bad that he killed himself. People do it. (Gente lo hacen.) However, there is a better way to handle it if we have made a terrible mistake. We have the blood of Jesus. (Tenemos la sangre de Jesus.) Jesus’ blood covers a multitude of sins, if we let it.

The high priests and elders took the money that Judas had thrown at them and bought a field where they put him and made it a place to bury travelers. Matthew points out that Jeremiah said this would happen. There are three places in the book of Jeremiah he may have been talking about: Jeremiah 19:1-13, Jeremiah 18:2-12, and Jeremiah 32: 6-9. Matthew says that the field is called “The field of blood.” ) In Jeremiah 19:6, it is called “The valley of slaughter.” Jeremiah was written between 626 and 586 B. C. (Jeremias estaba escrito entre 626 y 586 anos antes de Cristo.) This, like so many things we have talked about while talking about the book of Matthew, was part of Gods’ plan. This is one more prophecy of the many many we have talked about that was fulfilled.

He built a church building and a preacher’s house for the church.

Whatever we do, let’s not follow in Judas’ footsteps. Let’s learn to truly love God and truly love others. Let’s not sell Christ out for money. (No vendemos a Cristo para dinero.) I guess I can leave this by giving you a good example. When I was younger, I knew a man who opened a grocery store. His store was very popular, and he made a lot of money. He took the profits and opened another store. It was also popular, and he earned a lot more money. He was a Christian, and he realized that God had given him a talent to make money. He was always fair with his cusotmers. (‘El era siempre justo con sus clientes.) He found a small church that needed help. They had an old fallen down building and no preacher. This man used his own money and built them a new building. After that, he built them a nice big, new preacher’s house. He put a lot of money in the contribution so they could hire a preacher. The house he built for the church was bigger and nicer than the one he lived in. The good news is that there are people out there who aren’t just taking advantage of others like this man. Let’s not be the ones who are taking advantage like Judas did. Let’s love God and love others.
