I was handed a list of questions today, and I am going to answer these questions here for you too. This is the first question on the list.
Yes. I completely believe in the Bible as the inspired word of God and the authorityt for our lives. It is from God, and I can prove it and have proven it again and again. If you match up the prophecies about Jesus from the Old Testament with his life as recorded in the New Testament, they match. Everything in the Old Testament was written at least 400 years before everythng in the New Testament, and most even more like Isaiah that was written in 740 B. C. or Jeremiah that was written from 626-586 B.C. I cite those two books specifically because most of the prophecies about Jesus are in one of them. However, the first prophecy about Jesus was in the third chapter of Genesis at the fall of man when God was speaking to Satan : “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heal” (Genesis 3:15). (Written between 1445 C.-1406 C. by Moses while the children of Israel were wandering in the desert.) God made a plan right there in Genesis at the fall of man to send Christ into the world, and everything in the Old Testament leads up to Christ. Christ is the fulfillment of all the promises of God in the Old Testament. Everything God did in the Old Testament was to prepare mankind for Jesus’ coming.
Even the Ten Commandments were not exactly how people take them. God gave us the Ten Commandments so we would understand what sin is. He knew that mankind was not up to keeping the law perfectly, but he wanted us to understand what sin is. If mankind didn’t know what sin was, then Christ coming would mean nothing. The sacrifices were also not exactly how the people thought of them. They were required by God because God was teaching mankind so that they would understand when Christ came when he died for their sins. All of this is explained in the book of Hebrews.
With the prophecies that are fulfilled in Christ, the church, and John the Baptist, and everything happening just the way God said it would, it proves that the Bible is from God, that Jesus is the one sent from God that was prophecied about in the Old Testament, and that God exists. Otherwise, how would the prophets know in intricate detail about Jesus? Read Isaiah 53. It is an amazing chapter with so many details about Jesus that it is amazing. I used to teach introduction to the Bible at a university, and I would give the students this chapter and ask them who is was written about, and they said, “Well, Jesus. It is obvious.” After that, I told them when the chapter was written, and they were amazed! I have been teaching the book of Matthew for many years, and it is also amazing to match all the prophecies fulfilled in Matthew with those of the Old Testament. When I get finished with people, there is no doubt in their minds that God is God, the Bible is his word, and that Jesus was sent by God.
Besides the Bible itself as a proof, there are other proofs also. There is a book called “Hamel’s Diary.” It was written in the 1600’s by a European sailor named Hamel. He was shipwrecked and landed on Jeju Island in Korea. He had been on his way to Japan, but didn’t make it. Back then, Korea was a real hermit nation. If someone went to Korea, they weren’t allowed to leave. No one from Korea was allowed in, and no one was allowed out. The Koreans had been invaded so many times that they were afraid of the outside world, so Hamel was not allowed to leave. They traveled up the Korean peninsual with him to Seoul, the capital. On his way, he heard the traditional teachers of Korea teaching Bible stories from the Old Testament, but the Koreans didn’t even know the Bible existed. You see, the Koreans have an explanation for those stories. Their tradition says that the father of their first emperor came from the Tower of Babel after the languages were confused. They knew a lot about God without ever even knowing the Bible existed, and their stories agree with what happened before the Tower of Babel in the Bible.
As far as the flood, many, many cultures have stories about a great flood where everyone was killed except one good man and his family. To cite two, the Babylonians and the Egyptians both have the story of the flood in their traditional history. If you check the dates, there was a Pharoah around the time that the children of Israel were suposed to have been in Egypt who believed in the one, true, creator God. At other times, their history shows them to be polygamists. Some of the Chinese characters are even based on the early Bible stories, and I study the Chinese characters. I am part American Indian, and even the American Indians knew that God existed. They believed in the one Great Creator Spirit. If you look at English history, Joseph of Arimathea is credited from bringing Christianity to England after Jesus’ death. In Romanian history, the apostle Andrew brought Christianity to the Romanians (Romania was called Dacia then) after the death of Jesus. We know from the scriptures that Paul took Christianity to Italy, Greece, and Spain, but these others I have mentioned are part of the history of the countries. I could just continue, but you can find proofs of God through out history.
If you go to Science, I am not much of a Scientist, but I knew a little. Einstein proved the existence of God with the theory of Realtivity. He found a place where time does not exist, and for God, time does not exist. If you talk about Darwin, he renounced everything he wrote on his death bed. One of his relatives found his notes, and that is how the rest of the world got the information, but Darwin himself didn’t believe his theory. If you think about it logically, how difficult is it to make a car? Mankind has mastered that, and it is very complicated. However, mankind cannot originate a human being or a flower. Those must come from a higher inteligence than mankind, from God. As far as the theory of evolution, it is just that, a theory. I do believe that people change with time or a species changes with time, but never so much that it changes species. If you look into history, the people who live in the countries north of England all have white skin, blue eyes, and blonde or red hair, but it wasn’t always that way. At one time, they had dark skin and dark hair. They looked more like a middle eastern, and the explanation has been what they eat and where they lived that changed them, but they never changed species. The Japanese say their eyes are slanted because they eat different vegetables than the people from the west, and I believe them. The Japanese also say that they are short because they sit on their legs and stunt the growth in their legs, and I think that is partly true, but part of it is genetics. The Japanese say people who eat wheat have longer legs than those who eat rice because wheat causes their legs to grow longer. I don’t know, maybe. However, I know that we change according to what we eat and where we live, but we never change species.
