Matthew 23:29-39, Jesus Foretells the End of Judaisim and Persecution of the Church (Mateo 23:20-39, Jesus Predice el Fin de Judaismo y la Persecucion de la Iglesia)

In this passage of scripture, Jesus begins by talking about the Pharisees and teachers of the law and calling them hypocrites again. He talks about how their ancestors persecuted the prophets in the Old Testament and even killed them. He says the Pharisees and teachers of the law say they would never do what their ancestors did to the prophets. However, he says he is getting ready to send more prophets, and they will persecute the prophets he is sending. Jesus is talking about the apostles when he talks about the prophets he is getting ready to send.

All of the apostles were killed because of their faith except the apostle John, (Todos de los apostoles fuerson asesinados debido de su fe excepto el apostol Juan.) Some of that persecution is written about in the Bible. In Acts 4:3, the first record of the persecution takes place. Peter and John were going to the temple, and a man who had been crippled since birth asked them for money. They said to him that they didn’t have any silver or gold, but they would give him what they had. They healed him, and there was a big excitement, and many people were listening, so Peter took the opportunity to preach. They were arrested by the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees. This started all kinds of things. (‘Esta empiezo muchas cosas.)

In Acts 6-7. Stephen was preaching, and he was stoned to death. He was the first to die after Christ for Christianity. Paul at that time was called Saul. (En ‘este tiempo, Paul estaba llamado Saul.) Saul held the coats of the people throwing the rocks. Saul began persecuting the Christians terribly. (Sau empezo perseguir a los Cristianos terriblemente.) God put a stop to him, and he became a Christan in Acts 9. In Acts 8:1, it says, “On that day, a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered about Judea and Samaria.” All through Acts and history of the time both, it talks about persecution of the church. The book of Revelation was written in special symbolic language called apocalyptic language so that only the Christians could understand it because of the persecution. The emperor Nero used to light up Christians to use as torches in his garden. We have all heard about the Romans feeding Christians to their lions as sport.

Besides the persecution, Jesus says that Judaism will be left desolate in verse 38 of Matthew 23. He is talking about the coming of the New Testament and the church, (‘El esta’ hablando acerca de el Nuevo Testamento y la iglesia viniendo.) When Jesus was nailed to the cross, the Old Testament laws were nailed to the cross. Colossians 2:13-15 says: (Colosenses 2:13-15 dice:)

“When you were dead in your sins, and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Crist. He forgave us all our sins, having cancelled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and stood opposed to us; he took it away nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”

In Hebrews 8:7, it says, “If there had been nothing wrong with the first covenant, no place would have been sought for another,” referring to the Old and New Testaments. After that in Hebrews, it cites Jeremiah 31:31-34 which was written between 585-626 B. C., many years before Jesus. It talks about a new covenant that God had plans to make with mankind. There are several places in the Old Testament like this that talk about the time that everything is going to change, the coming of the church that happened in Acts chapter 2. Jesus knew this time was coming. (Jesus supo’ que ‘este tiempo estaba yendo.) John the Baptist also knew when he talked about the axe being at the root of the tree in Matthew 3. Both John the Baptist and Jesus knew that they were bringng a new covenant between God and mankind. The prophets knew it was coming. (Los profetas supieron que lo estaba yeno.)

The Pharisees and teachers of the law, no doubt, here in Matthew 23 had no idea what Jesus was talking about. However, Jesus knew the New Testament, the church, and a great persecution was coming.
