Matthew 18:21-35, Who Does Jesus Expect Us to Forgive? (Mateo 18:21-35, ¿A Quién Espera Jesús Que Perdonamos?)

We all have people in our lives who have driven us crazy. Some have been so bad that we think we can never forgive them. The truth is, we are better off psychologically and spiritually if we would just go ahead and forgive them. It isn’t easy, but it is necessary for several reasons. Here is a story that Jesus told about forgiveness: (Aqui es una historia que Jesus dijo acerca de perdon:)

The kingdom of Heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts. Remember, the kingdom of Heaven is where God rules. It can mean Heaven, the church, and mostly, our hearts. He began settling the accounts with a man who owed him one thousand talents. People like to go into how much money a thousand talents was, but money changing is not what this was about. Just realize it was a lot of money, maybe like a thousand dollars. The man couldn’t pay, so the king ordered that the man, his wife, his children, and everything he own be sold to pay the money.

The man was so upset that he fell on his knees and begged for patience. He assured the king that he would pay back every cent if he just wouldn’t sell him, his wife, his children, and everything he owned. The king took pity on him. (El rey se apiado de ‘el.) The king cancelled the debt and let the man go.

However, when the man left, he went out and found a fellow servant who owed him money. It was a fraction of the amount that he had owed the king. It was like the difference between one hundred dollars and one dollar. The man who had been forgiven his debt violently grabbed the other man and began choking him. “Pay back everything you owe me!” he demanded. (“!Paga lo que me debes!” ‘el demando.) His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, “Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.” However, the man refused to forgive him and threw him into prison until he could pay him back.

When that happened, another servant saw. The servant was extremely upset by what he saw. He went to the king and told him what he saw. (‘El se fue al rey y lo dijo que vio’.)

The king called the man in whose debt he had cancelled. (El rey llamo’ el hombre cuya deuda habia cancelado.) He said to him, “I cancelled your debt because you begged me.” “Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I have had on you?” The king was angry. (El rey estaba enojada.) The king sent him to jail to be tortured until he could pay his debt.

This is how God feels about people who don’t forgive others. There was a discussion on Facebook once about people getting mad and screaming and cussing at others. I actually couldn’t imagine anyone thinking they were so wonderful that the had the right to treat another person so poorly. I put a comment there that I could never think I am so much better than another person to treat them like that, and I got so many likes and I am still getting them. It just took one comment when everyone else wanted to talk about how angry they were that they wanted to scream at others, and it stopped the meanness. We know we should forgive, and God says if we don’t we won’t be forgiven. The forgiveness is for everyone, even those people who drive us crazy. If we never forgive them, we can’t go to Heaven. God forgave us of all the stupid things we have done. He expects us to forgive others also.
