Matthew 16: 1-4, The Sign of Jonah (Mateo 16:1-4, La Senal de Jonas)

The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and asked him for a sign. Probably some people begin by asking, “Who are the Pharisees and Sadducees?” The Pharisees and Sadducees were very religious groups of the day of Jesus, denominations or sects of Judaism. The difference between them was that the Pharisees believed in the resurrection, but the Sadducees didn’t. They had both become very worldly in their thinking, and the Sadducees to the point they even negated the idea of living with God when they died, but thought once you are dead, you are dead like atheists. The question the Pharisees and Sadducees asked was they requested he do a sign for them. They were trying to test him. (Ellos intentaron probarlo.)

Jesus understood who they were. (Jesus entendio’ quienes eran.) He said they knew that if the sky was red in the evening, that it would be good weather the next day. He also said they understood that if the sky was overcast in the morning, they would have rain. However, he said they could not interpret the signs of the times. He was referring to all the prophecies that he was fulfilling from the Old Testament. Jesus fulfilled more than one hundred prophecies, but the Pharisees and Sadducees couldn’t see it. He said that generation was wicked and adulterous.

He told them that the only sign they would get was the sign of Jonah. They knew who Jonah was, but the had no idea what he was talking about. The story of Jonah goes like this: (La historia de Jesus es asi:)

God told Jonah to go and teach the people of Nineveh. However, Jonah didn’t like the people of Nineveh and didn’t want to go, so he got on a ship going the opposite direction. A big storm came up, and all the people were scared. (Una tormenta vino’ y todas personas tuvieron miedo.) They were all praying to all their different gods to save them, but there was no help because the other gods were not real. Finally, Jonah knew he was the problem because you can’t run away from God. He told the people to throw him overboard. They threw him in the water, and the storm stopped. A big fish and and swallowed Jonah. (Un pez grande vino’ y trago’ a Jonas.)

Jonah stayed in the belly of the fish for three days alive, and then the fish spit him up on the shore, and he went to teach the people of Nineveh.

The sign of Jonah was three days in the belly of the fish that they all thought he was dead, but then seeming to come back to life on the third day when the fish spit him up on the shore. Jesus knew he would die, be buried for three days, and then come back to life on the third day. He knew that everyone would see what he was going to do. It would be the only thing the Pharisees and the Sadducees would understand.
