Korean Lesson 88, Let’s Talk About Fruit (과일 에대햐더 말하자), Part 1

There are several subjects we could discuss that we talk about everyday, but don’t even think about it. We need to talk about these subject to make your vocabulary in Korean larger. When I lived in Korea, I kept a running list of words all the time, even after I began having conversations. I kept my list of words on my night stand, and every evening, I drilled myself on the words on my nightstand. A problem that English speakers have when we try to speak an oriental language is that they developed clear across the world from us, and not only the alphabet and grammar are different, but with the basic vocabulary, the words are not similar at all. If we speak a language from Europe, even if the words are not exactly the same, we can often recognize a word in a foreign language because it is similar, but in an oriental language, we don’t have the basis to do that as English speakers. That is, unless they are words that have come into being lately. An example of this would be: 한드 폰 (handu pon), and that is their rendition of “cell phone.” The 한드 (handu) part means “hand,” and the 폰 (pon) part is “phone.” The have no “f” sound in Korean, so they either use “b” or “p” as a substitution. Another word from English is 컴퓨터 (keompyooteo) which means “computer.” As you can see, these are modern words, but basic words about basic topics that have been around forever are the ones that are very different.
