Matthew 14: 1-12, The Death of John the Baptist (Mateo 14:1-12, La Muerte de Juan el Bautista)

As everyone known, John the Baptist was a preacher. If you read in Matthew 3, you can see how serious of a preacher he was. He was so serious about his preaching that he didn’t preach in a synagogue or a temple, but he was an unpaid preacher that was so poor that he was wearing animal skins for clothing and eating grasshoppers and wild honey for his food. He was so convicted that in verse 7 of Mathew 3, when he saw the hypocritical Pharisees and Sadducees coming to be baptized, he called them “a brood of vipers.” He refused to baptize them until he could see for sure they had repented. He didn’t care if he stepped on anyone’s toes. That is what killed him. (Eso es lo que lo mato’.)

He continued to preach and tell the truth no matter what people thought. He even preached against the king. (‘El incuso predico’ contra el rey.) You see, the king had committed adultery. (Vez, el rey habia cometido adulterio.) the king’s name was Herod. (‘El nombre de el rey fue Herod.) His brother’s name was Phillip, and Phillip’s wife’s name was Herodias. Herod had taken Herodias away from Filipe. (Herod habia tomado Herodias de Filipe.) When the news of this reached the people, John the Baptist began preaching against the King Herod and Herodias because what they had done was adultery. John the Baptist was telling the truth loudly again. They were Jews, and it was plain in the ten commandments that the Jews followed that adultery was and is a sin (Deuteronomy 5:18). (The news of his preaching reached Herod and Herodias, and they didn’t like what he was saying. Herod had him arrested, and John the Baptist was put in jail. John the Baptist continued preaching even in jail.

Herodias was especially unhappy about what John the Baptist was saying. King Herod’s birthday came, and they had a party. At that party, Salome, the daughter of Herodias danced for King Herod. According to a history book, the book of Josephus, Salome was old enough to be married when she danced, and she was a beautiful young woman. King Herod was completely delighted with her dance at his birthday party. Out of that happiness, before witnesses, he promised to give her anything she wanted as a thankyou. She talked to her mother, Herodias, and Herodias wanted to shut John the Baptist up, and she told Salome to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a platter.

This request took King Herod by surprise. He thought she would ask for half his kingdom or something like that. He was afraid to refuse her. (‘El tenia miedo de recharzarla.) He was afraid of the people because he knew the people thought John the Baptist was a prophet. However, he had promised in front of all his friends to give her whatever she wanted, and he felt he had to live up to his promise. King Herod ordered his guards to cut off the head of John the Baptist off and bring it on a platter. They did as he ordered, and he presented Salome with the head of John the Baptist on a platter in front of his friends. Salome gave the head to her mother, Herodias. John’s followers came and took his body away and buried it. When Jesus heard, he had to go off by himself and pray because he was so sad he cried.
