Matthew 12:46-49, Who Does Jesus Claim? (Mateo 12:36-49?A Quien Reclama Jesus Como Suyo?)

Back in the sermon on the mount, in Matthew 7:13&14. Jesus told us that most people will not go to Heaven. He said, “Enter through the narrow gate for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But. small is the gate, and narrow is the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” ) Since lots of people want to go to Heaven, it would do us some good to figure out where that small gate and narrow road are.

Let’s look for that small gate. (Buscamos nos para la puerta estrecha.) Photo by Skitterphoto on Pexels.com

In these verses in Matthew 12: 46-49, Jesus is sitting in a house teaching. He is surrounded by a big bunch of people who are listening. His mother and brothers come looking for him, but they are having trouble getting in to talk to him. There are just too many people there. (Hay solamente demasiado gente alla.) They can’t even get in the house. Someone tells Jesus that his mother and brothers are outside. Jesus responds, “Who are my mother and brothers?,” and then pointed to his disciples and said, “The ones who do my will are my brothers, sisters, and mother.” (Jesus respondio’, “Quien son mi madre y mis hermanos?,” and then pointed to his disciples and said, “Los que hacen mi volundad son mis hermanos, hermanas, y madre.”)

He wasn’t snubbing his mother and brothers. He was using it as a way of teaching them they needed to do what he was saying. How do we know what the will of Jesus is so that we will be the ones he is pointing to?

Everyone knows that the Bible is the word of God. (Todos saben que el Biblia es el palabara de Dios.) 2 Timothy 3:16 &17 says, “All scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking correcting, and training in righteousness, so the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” The Bible is from God, and it will teach us what we need to be doing.

Besides knowing that the Bible is the word of God, we also need to be studying it. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly divides the word of truth.” It is very important that we not only study the Bible, but that we use it correctly.

The Bible is very different from fortune telling. (Biblia es muy diferente que adivinacion.) This is a sin. (‘esto es un pecado.) “Do not turn to mediums or seek or spiritists for you will be defiled by them” (Leviticus 19:31).

My grandmother used to say, “Let’s see what God wants to say to me today.” (Mi abuelo solia decir, “Vamos a ver que Dios quiere decir a mi hoy.”) She put the Bible on the table, she let it fall open to any passage, she closed her eyes, and put her finger on a verse. Then, she opened her eyes, and she thought whatever that verse said was what God wanted her to do. She was using the Bible like a magic eight ball or something. A magic eight ball is a children’s toy. They ask a question, shake the black ball, and then there is a window in the ball and several messages inside liquid in the ball, and a message floats to the window to read, and that message is supposed to be the answer to their question. We should never treat the Bible like that. (Nunca dememos tratar la Biblia asi.)

We all want to go to Heaven. (Nosotros todos queremos ir en Cielo.)

We really need to study to know everything that we can in the Bible. We need to be careful to study the Bible correctly. (Necesitamos tener cuidado y estudiar la Biblia correctamente.) Revelation 22: 18-19 say, “I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And, if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city which are described in this book.”

We all like to be tolerant. (A todos nos gusta ser tolerentes.) It is right to treat people right. (Es correct a tratar bien las personas.) However, we can’t let them teach us just anything. We have to study the Bible and figure it out. (Tenemos que estudiar la Biblia y resolverlo.) When I was teaching in Romania, I was teaching Orthodox nuns to speak English. They wanted so badly to teach me about Orthodoxy. They told me that Orthodoxy had twenty other books beside the Bible that they considered holy. I asked them, “If something written in one of those twenty other books doesn’t agree with what the Bible says, which do you choose?” Their response was that they choose the twenty other books because they only considered the Bible part of what God wanted, not all of what God wanted. However, that is adding to the Bible. (Sin embargo, ‘esta esta’ agregando la Biblia.) There are other religions who do this too. (Hay otras relgias que hacen ‘esta tambien.) Many churches have prayer books. (Muchas iglesias tienen libros de oraciones.) The Baptists also have a Baptist manual that tells you what you must do if you want to be a Baptist. The Mormons have the book of Mormon. (Los mormones tienen el libro de Mormon.) They say an angel gave it to Joseph Smith, and say it is scripture. Lots of churches have at least one other book. (Muchas iglesias tienen un otro libro.)

Even if an angel tells us something different from what is in the Bible, we should not listen.

Revelation is pretty clear that we shouldn’t be adding to the Bible, but people try. The first chapter of Galatians is also pretty clear. Galatians 1: 6-10 is very clear, “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and turning to a different gospel–which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ, but even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again; if anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than the one you accepted, let him be eternally condemned. Am I now trying to win the approval of men or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were trying to please men, I would not be a servant of God.” This seems pretty cut and dry, and it is repeated, so it must be important.

The Greeks have influenced our western thought patterns, and they also influenced the thought patterns of the writers of the New Testament.

It goes further than not adding, but as we read, we must divide the Bible correctly. There is a New Testament and an Old Testament, and we need to figure out what to do with them. We need to understand that the Old Testament was written in Hebrew, and the New Testament was written in Greek. We need to understand the culture where the Bible was written and translate not only language, but also culture into our culture to understand sometimes. When we read the New Testament, we need to know that the people of that time were under the Roman empire. The used Greek logic to express themselves. (Ellos usado logica Griega para expersarse.) This means there are introductions, thesis sentences, topic sentences, and conclusions. Inside the paragraphs, we need to understand if what is there is the main point and a command or just something to support the topic sentence like a reason or example.

My son made a point once that was funny, but very true. He found a scripture in the King James Version of the Bible that said everyone needed to wear a tire on their heads. He was trying to convince everyone that they need to put a tire on their heads. He knew it was nonsense, but he had a verse from the Old Testament he would read them that said just that. We know we don’t all have to wear tires on our head to please God. It was for that time and place, thousands of years ago, and the translation was from the 1600’s, and the meaning of the words had changed. However, we do that with other verses sometimes and don’t even think about it.

The Jews have many traditions. (Los Judios tienen muchos tradiciones.) Do you know why they tie a red string around a baby’s wrist? I stayed in a rabbi’s house once, and got to read many interesting Jewish books from his library. I learned many interesting Jewish traditions. (Aprendi’ muchas tradiciones judias interesantes.)

Some people think they don’t do it, but they have traditions in the church they think are Bible. However, Jesus didn’t like traidtions. He said about the traditions of his time, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are rules taught by men” (Matthew 15: 8 & 9). ) He was talking about the teachings from the Mishna, the other book the Jews had besides the Bible. He was adamant about only using the scriptures. He knew his Bible well. (‘El supo su Biblia bien.) He was always quoting from the Bible. (‘El siempre estaba citando de la Biblia.) If we are Christians, we need to be “like Christ” because that is what being a Christian means. We want Jesus to claim us, and we need to claim him and his ways.
