Matthew 12:38-41, “the Sign of Jonah” (Mateo 12: 38-41, “La Senal de Jonas”

Jesus had a real problem when he was alive. The most religious people of his day followed him around picking at him out of jealousy. (La gente mas religiosa lo seguia mordiendolo.) They didn’t like all the attention he was getting because they wanted everyone to think they were the most holy. There is no doubt that he was unhappy about their attitudes. However, he had patience. (Sin embargo, ‘el tuvo’ paciencia.) In this verses, they were taunting him and saying, “Come on! Show us a miracle!” They had heard that he was healing people, but he knew that doing a miracle for them wouldn’t help them believe because it would just make them more jealous and cause more trouble. When they asked for a miracle, this was his response: (Cuando ellos pidieron para un milagro, ‘esta fue su repuesta:)

He said the only miracle they would see was the sign of Jonah. Many people, no doubt, wondered what the sing of Jonah was. Who was Jonah? (Quien fue Jonas?) Jonah was asked to go to Nineveh and preach. He didn’t want to go and got on a ship going the opposite direction. A storm came, and everyone on the ship was worried because they thought the ship was going to sink. Jonah knew it was his fault, so he asked them to throw him overboard, and when they did, the storm stopped, and a big fish came and swallowed Jonah.

He stayed inside of the big fish for three days alive. After three days, the fish vomited him up on the shore. He went ahead and went to Nineveh and preached as God had asked him to. The people of Nineveh repented. (Las personas de Ninive se arrepentidieron.)

The religious people of Jesus day were going to see this played out again. Jesus would be sacrificed as Jonah was thrown into the water to try to appease God.

Jonah stayed in the belly of the big fish for three days just as Jesus would stay in the grave for three days.

After three days, the fish vomited Jonah up just as Jesus would come back to life.

most religious people of Jesus’ day would see people repenting just as Jonah saw the people of Nineveh repenting.

The people would be dying to their sin, repenting, as Jesus died.

The people would buried in water, baptized, just as Jesus was buried in the ground.

The people would have a new life exactly as Jesus had a new life. You can read the first half of Romans chapter six to see this explained in the Bible. If you read the last part of Acts chapter two, three thousand people became Christians, believed, repented, and were baptized on one day.

It is amazing how Jesus knew all of this before it ever happened. He came to the earth to die for our sins. He knew even then that he would have to die. He knew he would raise from the dead. He knew that people would believe and follow him. He saw it all before it happened. (Lo vio todo antes de que pasara.) He was and is the son of God. (‘El fue y es el hijo de Dios.)
