Why Did Jesus Say, “I Desire Mercy, Not Sacrifice.” in Matthew 12:7 (Porque Jesus dijo, “Deseo Misericordia, no Sacrficio” en Mateo 12:7)

Jesus said the exact same thing in Matthew 9:13, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” When I was in school, I learned that if a teacher said something more than once, it was important, and I needed to know it. Therefore, since Jesus keeps saying this, we really should look into it.

What is sacrifice? (Que es sacrificio?) What do the Hebrews sacrifice? (Que los everos sacrifcio?) They sacrificed animals at the temple. (Ellos sacrificrificaron animales al templo.”) The book of Hebrews, chapter 10, verses 5-9, it says again that even though the law required sacrifice animal, it wasn’t what God desired, but that what God wanted was for people to do what he asked. When he talks about sacrifice, he is talking about the worship that they did in the temple, and today, it is the worship we do in the church building. That worship is required, but it is more important to do what God wants. So, what does God want? (Por lo tanto, que Dios quiere?)

In Matthew 9:13, the other place that Jesus uses the exact same words, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice,” the Pharisees weren’t happy because Jesus was eating with sinners. Jesus was reaching out and loving people who needed him. He was doing what God sent him to do. He was doing what he asks every Christian to do. He was loving other people. (‘El estaba amando a los otros.) 1 John 4: 7&8 says, “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God because God is love.” When they asked Jesus what the most important commandment was, he said the most important commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and the second is like it, to love one another. He said all the laws are summed up in these two. Treating one another well is more important than going to church, but going to church is required.

Again, here in Matthew 12, Jesus’ disciples are hungry. It is the Jewish Sabbath, and the Ten Commandments said they weren’t supposed to do any work on the Sabbath. The disciples were picking grain from the grain fields to eat. The Pharisees were complaining because it was the Sabbath. They didn’t seem to care that the people were hungry. They were not doing God’s will. (Ellos no hacieron la volundad de Dios.) The Pharisees were not loving others by thinking that Jesus’ followers shouldn’t eat when they are hungry. The most important thing to God is that we love one another. We know that it is important to go to church, but treating others well is more important. Jesus desires mercy, not sacrifice. (Jesus deseo misericordia, no sacrifcio.)
