When we lived in Romania, my kids took karate. We became really good friends with their karate teachers. Two of them came to church and became Christians, and both of these guys ended up immigrating to America. One joined the American military and became American like that, but the other did something that only the most adventurous could accomplish, and I don’t recommend.
He wasn’t planning on immigrating. He just went to work on a ship. He had been to culinary school and was quite an accomplished cook, and he got a job as a waiter on a big cruise ship. For a young Romanian, he was doing really well financially. Every time he came back from his ship, he came to church and told us all about his trip. All the young Romanian guys wanted to hang out with him, and they would all go out for a good time. However, he had a problem. None of the young Romanian guys had any money, and they all expected him to pay for everyone. His nice paycheck seemed to dwindle terribly every time he came for a visit because everyone expected him to pay because he had a decent paying job.
The next time he went on a ship, he and another guy made a plan. Since he was a karate teacher, he knew exactly how to do it. The plan said the next time they got close to America, they would stage a fight. When they got close to Florida, they staged a fight and got put off the ship in Florida. However, they didn’t have visas. They were in trouble. If you don’t have a visa, you can’t get a job. If you can’t get a job, you have to sleep outside and could starve. There had to be a way out so he could get a job.
He met a girl who volunteered to marry him so he could get a visa. He met her and married her the same day, and after the wedding, she left, and he never saw her again. However, he could then legally work. He got a job as a bar tender. While he was tending bar, he began taking pictures. He ended up as a movie photographer. After a while, he decided he needed to get a better visa because he never saw that girl again. He got a lawyer, and it was expensive and complicated, but he finally got his visa situation worked out.
After his paperwork was worked out, he took off with another Romanian guy. They came to Korea to visit. He said he had always wanted to come here because of his interest in martial arts. We had a great time for about a week with me driving them all over the place site seeing. He had just filmed a movie about a Romanian boy who leaves Romania and immigrates to America. He and some of his Romanian buddies that I knew were promoting the movie, and it was at a movie competition in France. I am happy for him that he got his visa worked out, but staging a fight and marrying a girl you don’t know is not the way to get a good visa.
