Easy Spanish, Lesson 18, “Que’ haces con tu boca? Que’ hiciste con tu boca? Que’ haras con tu boca?” (“What do you do with your mouth? What did you do with your mouth? What will you do with your mouth?”)

Hola! Como esta’ usted?  Living with a Korean son in law who is trying to learn Spanish can get pretty funny at times!  One evening, he came home from work. He was walking through the house singing, “Para Bailar la Bamba!,” and the next thing he is saying, “Soy loco en la cabeza!,” and laughing.  If you have read my other blogs, “Para Bailar la Bamba” is a really fun Spanish song, and “Soy loco en la cabeza” means, “I am crazy in the head.”  He keeps trying to say crazy things in Spanish like, “Mi esposa esta’ en mi cabeza” which means “My wife is in my head.”  If it is silly, he will try to say it or sing it.  Playing with a language is what it takes to learn a language, and he is doing it.  I hope you are doing it too.  Let’s study Spanish!  Estudiamos nos espanol!

Explicaciones:

  1.  “Hago senal” means “I wave” or “I signal.”  “Hago” comes from “hacer” (to do, make, or “become, if it is accompanied by a reflexive pronoun.”) “Hago senal” is literally, “I make a signal.” Simple present tense: Hago senal=I wave, haces senal= you wave, hace senal= he or she waves.  Usted hace senal= (formal) you wave.  Hacemos senal= we wave.  Hacen senal= They wave.  Ustedes hacen senal= (formal, plural) you wave./Simple past tense: Hice’ senal= I waved, hiciste senal= you waved. Hizo senal = he or she waved.  Usted hizo senal= you (formal) waved.  Hicimos senal= we waved.  Hicieron senal = they waved.  Ustedes hicieron senal (formal, plural) you waved./future tense:  Hare’ senal= you will wave.  haras senal= you will wave.  hara’ senal= he or she will wave.  Usted hara’= (formal) you will wave.  Haremos senal= we will wave.  Hareran senal= they will wave.  Usted hareran senal= (plural, formal) you will wave.
  2. “Pongo” comes from “poner” (to put). It is also a useful verb to know.  Simple present tense:  I put= pongo. you put= pones. He or she puts = pone.  You put (formal) = usted pone.  We put =ponemos. They put = ponen. You guys put= Usted ponen./ Simple past tense:  Puse’= I put. Pondras= you will put.  Pondra’= he, she will put, Usted pondra’= (formal) you will put.  Pondremos=we will put.  Pondran = They will put.  Usted pondran= (plural, formal) you will put.
  3. “Mirar” (to look) is another useful verb.  Simple present tense: Miro= I look. Miras= you look. Mira= he, she looks. Usted mira= (formal) you look.  Miramos = we look. Miran= they look.  Ustedes miran= (formal, plural) you look.  //Simple past tense:  Mire’= I looked. Miriste= you looked. Miro’= he, she looked. Usted miro’= (formal) you looked.  Miramos= We looked.  Miraron= They looked.  Ustedes miraron= (formal, plural) = you looked.//Future tense: Mirare’= I will look. Miraras= you will look.  Mirara’= he, she will look. Miraramos= we will look.  Mirararon= they will look.  Ustedes mirararon= (formal, plural) you will look.
  4. “Leer” (to read).  Simple present tense: I read = leyo, you read= lees, he, she reads and you (formal) read= lee. We read= leemos. They read = leen. You guys read (formal) = ustedes leen. Simple past tense: lei’= I read. leiste= you read. leyo’= he, she read. you read (formal)= ustd ley’.  We read = leimos.  They read = leyeron. You read (plural, formal)= ustedes leyeron.  Future tense:  leere’ = I will read.  leeras= you will read.  leera’= he, she will read. usted leera’ = (formal) you will read.  leeremos = we will read.  leeran = they will read. Usted leeran= (plural, formal) you guys will read.

  7. “fumar” (to smoke), “besar” (to kiss).  Just like “sussurar” (to whisper), they are “ar” verbs that aren’t used as often as the others. That means they will be regular verbs, so use the same verb endings for these two verbs as you would use for “sussurar.”
  8. “rierse” (to laugh) and “sonrierse”(to smile) are reflexive verbs which means you can put them after verbs like “querer” and use that reflexive pronoun if you like” Quiero rierme = I want to laugh (myself).   Quiero sonrierme= I want to smile (myself.). Putting the “myself” there doesn’t make as much sense in English, but that is what they do.
  9. If you learn to conjugate, “rier,” you can use the same endings also for “sonrier”:  simple present tense: I laugh = rio. you laug =ries. he or she laughs= rie. you (formal) laugh= rie. We laugh= riemos. They laugh = rien. You laugh (formal)= usted rien.  simple past tense:  rei’= I laughed. reiste= you laughed. rio’= he, she laughed. usted rio’= you laughed (formal).  reimos= we laughed.  reiron= they laughed. ustedes rieron= (formal, plural) you laughed.  future tense:  reire’= I will laugh. reiras= you will laugh. reira’= he, she, you (formal) will laugh.  reiremos= we will laugh.  reiran= they will laugh. ustedes reiran= you will laugh (formal, plural)

  11. “decir” = to say.  Simple present tense: digo= I say. dices= you say. dice= he, she says. usted dice= (formal) you say.  decimos= we say. dicen= they say. ustedes dicen= you say (formal, plural).  Simple past tense:  dije’= I said. dijiste= you said. dijo’= he said, she said. usted dijo’= you said (formal). dijimos= we said.  dijieron= they said. ustedes dijieron= you said (formal, plural).  Future tense: dire’= I will say. diras= you will say. dira’= he, she will say. usted dira’= you will say (formal).  diremos = we will say. diran= they will say. ustedes diran = you will say (formal, plural).
