Easy Spanish, Lesson 13, “Has comido los frutos?” (Have you eaten the fruit?)

Hola!  Como esta usted?  Fuiste a la iglesia hoy? Fui a la iglesia hoy. Me gusta ir a la iglesia. (Hello!  How are you? Did you go to church today? I went to church today. I like to go to church.)  One of the ways I improved my Spanish was through church.  I bought a Spanish/English Bible and attended a Spanish Bible class that was part of a Mexican ministry in Texas.  I followed along in Spanish, and if I didn’t understand, since there was Spanish and English on the same page of my Bible, I looked at the English.  Later, I attended another Bible class at another church where no one in the class was a native speaker of Spanish, and we discussed the Bible in Spanish. It was a Spanish conversation class.  All the students in that class had studied Spanish many more years than I had, but the Mexican elder came to me and said, ” You speak Spanish, and you belong in a Spanish Bible class,” so he put me in that class.  The other students in that class taught me a lot about Spanish.  Later, my dad saw my Spanish/English Bible, and he wanted it.  I ended up giving it to him. About that time, a friend of mine who is a Hispanic Spanish teacher saw me with my Spanish/English Bible and told me I needed to get rid of it and use an all Spanish Bible. I listened and made a trip into Fort Worth to a book store and bought an all Spanish Bible.  I can read the all Spanish Bible now like I read English.  Many churches have Mexican ministries in Texas, and attending a Spanish Bible class is a sure way to make your Spanish better.  I hope there is one where you live. If not, I will share a little with you from my Spanish Bible and explain it to you.  If there are no stores with Spanish Bibles where you are, you can order them off the web if you want one.  Estudiamos nos! Let’s study!

Explicaciones:

  1.  I took each word and translated it below in the order they are written in the Bible passage.  If you really want to make it English, you will have to change the words around and even take some of the words out, but I put it all there because you need to see what is there.  You need to get used to the Spanish word order and the Spanish was of expressing things. If you want, you can look these verses up in English and compare them to the Spanish.
  2. Often, when they talk about God talking, they first say “dijo'”= he said, and then after that, they tell you who said it “Dios” (God).
  3. When you have a noun, the adjectives always come after the nouns: “el dia segundo” = the second day. “Second” comes before “day” in English, but after “day” in Spanish.  “Hierba verde”= green grass.  In English, green comes before “grass,” but in Spanish, “green” (verde) comes after grass (hierba).
  4. There are many, many words that are like English:  “separe” = separate. “expansion” = espansion. “descubrir” = uncover.  In English, in many words, “des” and “un” have similar meanings. “Discover” (an English word) is very similar in meaning to “uncover.”  We also have the word “tierra” = land.  Have you ever seen the movie, “Gone With the Wind”?  The name of the plantation in that movie was “terra” meaning land.   “Produzca” = produce. “fruto” = fruit. “genero” =gender or kind.  “reunion” – reunion. The only difference is the pronunciation.  For example, in Spanish, “reunion” is said “reh-oonyon” trilling the “r.” In English, you should know that “reunion” is pronounced “ree-yoon-yun.” All the other words that are similar, you have had in other lessons. As an English speaker, you have an advantage in learning Spanish because there are so many similar words between English and Spanish.
  5. This is a good time to give you possessive pronouns.  mi=my, tu= your, su= his, her, its, their, formal your. nuestra (feminine), nuestro (masculine)=our.// mi casa= my house. tu casa= your house. su casa= his house, her house, their house, your house (formal). nuestra casa=our house. //Mis casas= my houses.  Tus casas= your houses. Sus casas= his, her, its, their formal your houses.  Nuestras casas= our houses.
  6. Simple past of “ser” (to be):  I was = yo era. you were = tu eras. he, she, it was = el, ella era. You were (formal) =usted era. We were =  nosotros ‘eremos.  They were = ellos, ellas eran. You guys were (formal) = ustedes eran.  Remember that “ser” identifies something or give you an adjective:  Era dia. = it was day.  Era bueno= it was good. El era un hombre = he was a man.  Ella era muy bonita. = she was very pretty.
  7. “este'” (was) is just another past tense of “estar” (to be located, to be feeling).
  8. Studying like this, you can learn lots of useful words like these:  luego= then, next. medio = half, halfway through, in between.  segundo = second. debajo= below. lugar= place. juntar= gather. tambien = also. cielo = sky. despues = after, then. segun= according to. seco=dried, past tense of “secar” (to dry).  semilla = seed. All the other words either they are in previous lessons or self explanatory because they are so much like English.  If you stay with the same subject and slowly add verses, then you will slowly be getting a good, usable vocabulary.  Some of these words, I learned in school in Spanish class, but some of them, I learned from going to Spanish Bible classes.
  9. primero, primera= first. segundo, segunda =second. tercer, tercera =third. cuatro, cuatra = fourth. quinto, quinta = fifth. sexto, sexta = sixth. septimo, septima = seventh. octavo, octava = eighth, noveno, novena = ninth. decimo, decima = tenth.
  10. Yo he comida = I have eaten. Tu has comida = you have eaten. el ha comida = he has eaten. ella ha comida= she has eaten. usted ha comida = you have eaten (formal).  Nosotros hemos comida = we have eaten.  ellos han comida = they have eaten (masculine).  ellas han comida =they have eaten (feminine). Ustedes han comida = you guys have eaten (formal).
  11. yo hice = I did, made tu hices= you did, made.  el hizo= he did, made. ella hizo= she did, made. usted hizo= you did, made (formal). nosotros hicimos= we did, made. ellos hicen = they did, made (mascuine). ellas hicen (feminine). ustedes hicen= you guys did made (formal)// yo he hecho= I have made, I have done. tu has hecho = you have made, done. he has done, made = el ha hecho. she has done, made = ella hecho. You have done, made (formal) = usted ha hecho.  We have done, made = nosotros hemos hecho.  They have done, made = ellos, ellas han hecho.  You guys have done, made (formal) = ustedes han hecho.
