Limba Romana, Lectia 10, Traveling, Weddings, and Time Past (Calatorie, Nuntele, si Timpul Trecut

Buna Ziua. Ce mai faci? Let’s continue. It is the only way for you to learn to speak Romanian.  When you learn a language, you need to think about what your motivation is.  If you have a good motivation, you will go ahead and learn a lot. If you don’t have motivation, it becomes a chore.  They say that learning to speak a language is 99% motivation.  I learned to speak Romanian because I love God and I love the Romanian people. I wanted to get to know the Romanians who couldn’t speak English.  I wanted to do what I could for the Romanians because I was there right after the revolution and saw how hard things were and that they needed people to care.  If you want to understand a little of my motivation of why I learned Romanian, you can read my book “Escaping Communism”  by Ronda Everson. You can find it on Amazon.  Things are different in Romania now than they were then.  I am glad I speak Romanian because I really enjoy getting together with my Romanian friends an keeping in touch with Romanians who are still in Romania or in another country, and many of them travel.  What is your motivation?  When we learn a language, we have to think about why, and if our “why” is strong enough, we will learn it.  Let’s do Romanian!  Hai sa facem limba romana.

  1.  “Cele alta” = the other. “Cele alte” = the others.
  2.  “a vrea” = “to want.”  Simple present tense:  I want= eu vreau, you want= tu vrei, he wants = el vrea, she wants= ea vrea, we want = noi vrem, you guys want = voi vreti, they want = ei vor.
  3. Simple past tense of “a vrea”:  I wanted: eu am vrut, you wanted= tu ai vrut, he wanted= el a vrut, she wanted= ea a vrut, we wanted= noi am vrut, you guys wanted= voi ati vrut, they wanted= ei au vrut. Look at the past tense.  You already know the pronouns. If you look at the first part of the verb, it is almost the same as “a avea” = to have:  I have= eu am, you have= tu ai, he has= el are, she has = ea are, we have = noi avem, you guys have = voi aveti, they have = ei au, but the past tense is slightly easier with “he and she.”  If you learn to conjugate “a avea” (to have) in simple present tense, it is the key to past tense.  After you know that part, you only have to learn one form to put on the end to make any past tense, and in this case, it is “vrut.”
  4. Past tense of “a merge” (to go) is:  I went = am mers, you went= ai mers, he, she went= a mers, we went= am mers, you guys went= ati mers, they went= au mers.
  5. “to be” (a fi) simple present tense: I am=eu sunt, you are= tu esti, he is= el este, she is= ea este, we are=ei sunt, you guys are = voi sunteti, they are =ei sunt.  You can simplify “este” to “e” (pronunciation: eh).  If you want to make this in past tense: I was = am fost, you were= ai fost, he was= a fost, she was= a fost, we were= am fost, you guys were= ati fost, they were= au fost. “I was in Romania” = Am fost in Romania. When Romanians want to say they went to a country, they say they were in a country: “I went to America.”= “Am fost in America.”
  6. “Se imbraca” (to dress) is another reflexive verb. When you want to say, “I dress,” you literally say “I dress myself.” I dress myelf= ma imbrac, you dress yourself= te imbraci, he dresses himself= il imbraca, she dresses herself = ii imbraca, we dress ourselves = ne imbracam, You guys dress yourselves = vei imbracati, they dress themselves = se imbrac.  I you want to say, “She dresses the child’: Ea il imbraca pe copilul.” If the child is a girl, you say: “Ea ii imbraca pe copila.”
  7. Past tense of “se imbraca” (to dress) is “I dressed” = ma am imbracat (or more commonly used, m-am imbracat), “you dressed” = te am imbracat, “he dressed” = il a imbracat, she dressed= ii a imbracat, we dressed = ne am imbracat, you guys dressed= veti imbracat, they dressed = se au imbracat.
  8. “a locui” (to live in a place). Simple present tense:  I live = eu locuiesc, you live= tu locuesti, he lives = el locuieste, she lives = ea locuieste, we live = noi locuim, you guys live = voi locuiti, they live = ei locuiesc.  (the “s” in this verb is pronunced like “sh.” ) Simple past tense:  I lived: eu am locuit, you lived= tu ai locuit, he lived= el a locuit, she lived= ea a locuit, we lived = noi am locuit, you guys lived = voi ati locuit, they lived = ei au locuit.
  9. Since I have presented “a locui” (to live in a place), you should know there is another verb in Romanian for “to live.”  “I want to live.” = “Vreau sa traiesc.”  “I want to live in Romania.” = ” Vreau sa locuiesc in Romania.”  I live a wonderful life.= Traiesc o viata minunata. You live a wonderful life.= To traiesti o viata minunata. He lives a wonderful life. = El traieste o viata minunata. Sje lves a wonderful life. = Ea traieste o viata minunata.  We live a wonderful life. = Noi traim o viata minunata.  You guys live a wonderful life. = Voi traiti o viata minunata.  They live a wonderful life. = Ei traiesc o viata minunata.  (viata = life) (pronunciation of “viata”= vee-ahtsah) (minunata= wondeful). (pronuncation of minunata: meenoonahtah)
  10.  Past tense of “a trai” (pronunciation: ah trah-ee) :  I lived a wonderful life= am trait o viata minunata. You lived a wonderful life.= Tu ai trait o viata minunata. …etc.(pronunciation of “trait” = trah-eet).
  11. The word for country in Romanian is “tara” (pronunciation: tsahrah).
