Limba Romana, Lectia 9, Cars and Rabbits (Masinele si Ieperasele)

Buna Seara! (Good Evening).  Sunt aici din noua. (I am here again.) Cati de mult poti sa intelegi? (How much can you understand?) Ce mai faci? ( How are you?)  If you don’t live in Romania, you are not getting the advantage of hearing people speak Romanian all around you, so I think it is good for me to throw a few sentences, questions, or phrases in here and there to help you be exposed to more than what is in the lesson.  Let’s get started! Hai sa incepam!

  1.  Talking about cars and driving is actually fairly easy in Romanian.  We all know a car is a kind of machine, and the Romanians are not as specific as we are and just call it a machine (masina).  As far as driving, they conduct cars which makes sense too, so that is also easy to learn.  Here is how you conjugate “a conduce” in simple present tense:  I drive = eu conduc, you drive =tu conduci, he drives= el conduce, she drives=ea conduce, we drive= noi conducem, you guys drive= voi conduceti, they drive= ei conduc.
  2. There is more than one way to say “of” in Romanian: “de” or “lui.”  In English, if something belongs to someone, we just put an apostrophe, and then an “s” on the end of the person’s name, and put it before the thing that belongs to the person. However, in Romanian, you must put the thing first, then put “lui” (of) and then put the person’s name.  “Mary’s house, “or “the house of Mary” becomes “casa lui Maria” in Romanian.  “John’s car” or “the car of John” becomes “masina lui Ion” in Romanian. (pronunciation of “Ion”:  eeyon) (pronunciation of “Maria”: Mahree-ah).
  3. A good verb here you will use a lot is “a vorbi” (to speak).  To conjugate “a vorbi” in simple present tense: I speak= eu vorbesc, you speak: tu vorbesti, he speaks: el vorbeste, she speaks= ea vorbeste, we speak = noi vorbim, you guys speak= voi vorbiti, they speak = ei vorbesc.  Now, you can say: “Can you speak Romanian?”=Poti sa vorbeasca limba romana?”  (“vorbeasca” is the form they use after “pot” (can)).  Vorbiti limba romana?= Do you speak Romanian (respectful because you don’t know the person well.) Or, Vorbesti limba romana?= Do you speak Romanian?  “Da, pot sa vorbesc limba romana.”= Yes, I can speak Romanian. “Da, pot sa vorbesc un pic de limba romana.” = Yes, I can speak a little Romanian. (un pic= a little).  Romanian = limba romana or romaneste.
  4. Another verb here is “a veni” (to come).  To conjugate it in simple present tense:  I come = eu vin, you come = tu veni, he comes= el vine, she comes= ea veni, we come= noi venim, you guy come= voi veniti, they come= ei vin.
  5. “Pasti” (pronounced: pahsht) is the word for Easter. If you look in the Bible, it is the same word as Passover.  When the Romanian celebrate Easter, they are actually celebrating the Old Testament Passover combined with the New Testament idea of Easter.  The word “Easter” is never in the Bible, but “Pasti” is.  In Romanian, they all like to get a baby lamb to eat for Easter like they did for Passover in the Bible. Easter is a huge holiday in Romania.
  6. “zgomot” = sound, and “nici un zgomot”= not even a sound.  “Nu am nici un pritena.”= I don’t have even one friend.  “Nu am nici o masina.”= “I don’t even have a car.” or “I don’t have even one car.” “nu am nici un trandafiri.” = I don’t even have one rose.  “Nu fac nici un zgomot.” = I don’t even make a sound.
