Limba Romana, Lectia 6, Hai sa ne Jucam! (Let’s Play!)

(This is a revision of yesterday’s lesson because after I posted it, I realized I was having internet trouble, and only half of the lesson got posted, and any proofreading I had done wasn’t there.)

Buna Ziua. Ma bucur sa te vad aici astazi. (I am glad to see you here today.)  I hope you are enjoying my Romanian blogs. When I was in Romania, there were two prices for everything, one price for the Romanians, and one price for the foreigners.  The Romanian price was the cheapest.  Luckily, even though I am an American, I look like a Romanian and sound like a Romanian when I speak Romanian, so they always gave me the cheaper price.  🙂 (Oameni roman, te rog sa ma iertati daca nu fac tot perfect pe pagina. Daca ati putut sa vorbi cu mine, ari fi diferit.)

Explanations:

  1. If you have studied Spanish, you have heard of reflexive verbs and pronouns. However, if you haven’t, I will explain it to you.  These verbs are not the same as our English verbs.  ” sa se joaca” = “to play” is a reflexive verb.  That “sa” is like “to” in an English infinitiave, and the “se” is the reflextive pronoun.  I will now try to explain the meaning of these pronouns:  Ma joc = (literally in Romanian, I play myself), but in English, we would say, “I play.”  Te joci=(Literally, you play yourself), but in English we would say “you play.”  El se joaca = (Literally, he plays himself), but in English, we would say “he plays.”  Ea se joaca = (she plays herself), but in English, we would say, “She plays.”  Ne jucam= (we play ourselves), and “We play.” Voi jucati= (you guys play yourselves), or “You guys play.” Se jucau= (They play themselves) or “they play.” There are other verbs like this, but not all of them.
“Copila” means the girl child.  “Copilul” means the boy child.  “Un copil” = a boy child or just a child.  “O copila” means a girl child.  “Copii” means children or the children.
2.”Mic” means small, masculine.  “Mica” means small, feminine. “Mici” means small, plural.  When you use a masculine noun, you must use a masculine adjective. When you use a feminine noun, you must use a feminine adjective.  When you use a plural noun, you must use a plural adjective.
3.”Lor le place” literally means “It is pleasing to them.”  “Lor” is “to them.”  “Le” is “it.” However, we would say in English, “They like it.”
    4. “Se joaca” means “to play,” and “un joc” is a game.  Jucarile means toys.
    5. “Disractiv” means “fun,” the adjective.  “distractia” or “distractie” means “fun,” the noun.
    6. “Scara” means “stair” or “ladder.” If you want to “stair case,” you must make “scara” plural: “scarale.”
    7. “Daca” means “if.”
    8. “Sus” = up. “Jos” = down. “Pe” = on.
    9.  Eu pot= I can. Tu poti= you can. El Poate.= he can. Ea Poate. = she can. Noi putem= we can.  Voi puteti= you guys can. Ei pot.=They can.  This verb is like ours except that you can find the pronoun also embedded in the verb, so you could use just the verb without the pronoun.  In a blog in the past, I explained that “poate” can also mean “maybe, or it can be.”
    10. “I can go” = Pot sa mearga. “You can go”= Poti sa mearga. “He can go”= El poate sa mearga. “She can go”= Ea poate sa mearga.  “We can go”= Noi putem sa mearga. “You guys can go”= Voi pututi sa mearga. “They can go”= Ei pot sa mearga.
    11. “Afara” means “outside.” Remember “in intru” means “inside.”
    12.  “Nici” means “either.” “You can’t go either”= Nici tu poti sa mearga.  “You can’t do it either” = Nici tu poti sa o faca. “He can’t do it either”= Nici el nu poate sa o faca.:
