A Serious Topic for People Professing to Be Christians: Our Mouths

Like most people, I am on Facebook.  I try to pick Christians as my Facebook friends because I don’t want to deal with offensive things being posted or get into arguments about morality.  However, some people get on Facebook and forget who they are.  They send out things with bad language. They tell dirty jokes, etc.  I try talking to them because when they do it. it offends me, and I worry about them when they do things like this.

However, certain people just consistently post things that offend, and sometimes even try to justify what they did.  Some get mad at me when I talk to them about what they put out there for the rest of the world, including me, to read.  Even a guy who used to teach a Bible class that I attended puts things out there like that.  I understand that the media is constantly blasting us.  People hear these things so often that they wink at them and ignore them, and after a while they are looking and listening, and then they are are coming out of the person. I am not angry. I am worried about the people who do these things.  I love other people. I have given my life as a missionary. I have made tough choices. I am not perfect, but I know what God says about this topic. I love the people of God. and  I love God’s ways.  What does God have to say about this topic?

There are several scriptures, and I will only give you the scriptures because scriptures like these don’t need to be explained, They are self explanatory and easy to understand:

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with  were sealed for the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4:29 & 30).

“But now you must rid yourself of these: anger, rage, malice, and filthy language from your lips: (Colossians 3:7).

“But I tell you, do no swear at all: either by Heaven for it is God’s throne, or by the earth for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem for it is the city of the Great King.  And do not swear by your head, for you can’t make even one hair white or black. Simply let your ‘yes’ be ‘yes’ and your ‘no’ be ‘no; anything beyond this comes from the evil one” ( Matthew 5:34-37).

“So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding, and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality, so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.  You, however, did not come to know Christ that way”…”You were taught with regard to your former way of life to put off your old self which is being corrupted by deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds, and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:17-24).

” Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.  It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures of the seas are being tamed and have been tamed by man, but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison  With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing.  My brothers, this should not be.  Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? Brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?  Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water” (James 3″5-12).

Please think about these scriptures.  God doesn’t want us cussing, telling dirty jokes, gossiping, and abusing the ears and in the case of Facebook, the eyes of those around us.  He wants our thinking to be pure.  God is pure, and he wants us to be like  him.  None of us are perfect. 1 John chapter one says that if we say we have never sinned, we are a liar.  I am just trying to urge people to have more self control. Try to control your mouths.  Try not to justify coarse language or coarse jokes when you are caught.  Try not to do this to start with, but if you do, realize the person who asked you to stop cares about your soul.  We get on Facebook and blast the people who are having abortions. We blast people who don’t agree with us politically. You are right.  having an abortion is killing a baby. God considers homosexuality a sin.  Taking drugs and getting drunk just aren’t acceptable to God at all, but also dirty jokes and cussing are sins too.  This is not just my opinion.  You can read the scriptures for yourselves.

If you don’t like what I have to say, I guess you could unfriend me.  You could be like the people of Jesus’ day who didn’t like what he said, ” To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the market place and calling out to the others: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge and you did not morn'” (Matthew 11:16 &17).  Jesus came down from Heaven and lived among us and let mankind kill him on the cross to show us how to get to Heaven and show us how much he loved us, but these people were like children and said, “If you don’t play my way, I will take my toys and go home.”  I hope everyone who reads this takes it in the spirit it is written, a caring spirit who cares about others who really cares whether or not they do what they profess in Christ and who really doesn’t like it when I see dirty cartoons, read dirty jokes, or see cuss words posted by my Christian friends.
