Japanese Origami Wale

I have been trying to share lots of origami with you because I know origami is fun.  In America, the kids might learn how to do one of these things I have shared in Art class at school, but they usually don’t get to learn this.  However, it is fun.  Often, after church here, I see one of my little buddies (one of the children) sitting by himself doing origami.  Origami is not really a Korean thing, but many children here try to learn it.  Many mothers see me doing it and ask me if I would take time to show them how to do it.  Sometimes, I give out origami to the kids at church like some Americans like giving out candy to the kids at church.  Kids and adults both really like origami. If you want to be friends with someone, a sure fire way is to do the Japanese thing and give them some origami. Today, I will show you how to make a wale.

Start with one completely square piece of paper.
Fold the paper in half so it looks like a triangle.
Unfold the paper because you just folded it because you needed the fold line.
At one end, fold the paper up to the fold line on either side.
Next, one one side, fold the top down over the part where you folded the bottom up to the fold line.
Fold the other side toward the fold line too. Your paper will be in the shape of a diamond.
Turn it over and fold back the point on the first end you folded, then take it out. You are making a fold line again.
Here, I am folding the point inside on the fold like I just made.
This is what it looks like after you tuck in the point on the first end that you folded, using the fold line you just made.
Now, you are going to work with the points on either side of the diamond. Open one up. Pull the paper out from under the other paper that is folded over it.  You will be pushing it back the other way.
Pull out the other side too, and fold the paper down so that what was under is now on top and folded the other direction.
Next, turn it over again and fold over the sides of the diamond so that it looks like this.
Fold it over on the original middle fold line.  Making sure that the flaps that you just folded are inside.
Next, take the part that is folded on the outside and fold it down, then turn it over and do the same thing on the other side.
On one end, you will want to tuck the paper up inside so the tail comes up, and on the other end, you will want to draw eyes.  Draw an eye on both sides of the wale.
The wale is finished, and it can stand up on its fins.

I hope you liked this wale.  I will continue sharing origami as long as I can think of different pieces to do.  These come from Japan.
